As he had in Giverny, Theodore Wendel found plenty of inspiring subject matter both close to his home on County Street and among the fields and marshes of the family’s Lower and Upper Farms on Argilla Road.

In View of Lower Farm, Ipswich the artist embraced the opportunity to arrange the composition using the preset divisions of the fields and pastureland and the cloud covered sky. These colorful horizontal bands immediately draw the eye while the scene is further enlivened through Wendel’s use of short vertical brushstrokes in the immediate foreground.
