The Cottage Garden was featured in the Vose Galleries' 1925 exhibition and demonstrates the artist’s successful merger of his two passions: a charming old homestead amid a mature flowering garden. These qualities found an immediate buyer during the run of the show and the painting descended within the collector’s family until 1998. The Great Depression and the evolution of more modern art movements eventually resulted in fewer sales in the 1930s, yet Graves continued to paint the flowers, gardens and historic homes that brought him so much happiness
