In 1897, the Peppers returned to America and moved to Concord, Massachusetts. They often summered at Lake Attean in northern Maine, where the family built their own log cabin. Over the years Pepper continually created watercolors depicting the lake and its surrounding mountains, capturing the scenic terrain in all weather conditions. It is likely that Mountain Lake was painted during one of these Maine summers.
