Compris was born in Amsterdam in 1885. After studying at the Quellinus School and the Royal Academy in his home country, he immigrated to the United States and established himself in New York as a mural painter and furniture designer. He also painted portraits and still life subjects, such as this arrangement featuring a flowering nasturtium plant whose orange blossoms pop against the muted background and complement the blue figurine beside it.
This painting retains its original frame.
