An example of Enneking’s mountain views, Crotched Mountain in October captures the idyllic countryside of southern New Hampshire as the greens of summer transform into the golden oranges of autumn. His impressionist brush adds strokes of color, a cluster of red in the distance, grayish-purples in the mountain itself, bringing with them a subtle balance to the composition.
More information about this painting...
Technically located in three New Hampshire burgs, Crotched Mountain’s western slopes rise in Bennington, its southern edge is in Greenfield while the summit lies in the town of Francestown. Early settlers to the area noted the peak’s unique V-shaped peak, suggesting a fork, or “crotch,” of a tree, thereby giving the mountain its name.
