This portrait of Lt. Raymond Henry Jones Perry was likely done by John in tribute to the family of his daughter’s husband, James DeWolf Perry, whom Edith married in 1908. The sitter, James’ great-grandfather, hailed from a distinguished Rhode Island Navy family; his father was Captain Christopher Raymond Perry (1761-1818) and his brothers included Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry (1785-1819) and Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry (1794-1858). Raymond was commissioned as a Lieutenant in 1813 (he was later promoted to Captain), and during his distinguished naval career, served during the War of 1812 and the Barbary War.
