The complementary blue and yellow strokes of color in Across the Bay demonstrate the artist’s thoughtful application of tonal harmonies to subjects beyond the dense woodlands and snow-covered meadows the comprised the majority of his work. The painting was shown at one of the Salmagundi Club’s annual Thumb-box exhibitions, which began in 1908 and focused on works created en plein air measuring no larger than 16 x 20.
