"Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, snow was infrequent and ephemeral, always quickly melting away in the rain that followed. Snow-covered landscapes like in Ochtman’s Winter Afternoon were few and far between. This piece, with its expansive landscape, open sky, and gorgeous, muted blue tones and smatterings of cream and ochre, perfectly captures the magical joy of winter- the hush of snowfall, the hazy landscape fading into the horizon, and the dreamy tranquility of fresh snow. While Ochtman was almost entirely self-taught, his ability to convey such serenity in his paintings is breathtaking." - Molly Lynch, Gallery Assistant
