Burdick painted many still lifes and portraits and remained closely tied to the genre tradition throughout his career. Haying in Wartime is typical of Burdick’s local genre scenes employing patriotic subject matter. Likely dating to the summer of 1898 when America was at war with the Kingdom of Spain, this piece shows the women and elderly men of a rural community as they bring in a cutting of hay in the absence of the town’s soldiers.
